How to get help with Message Album, what to include in a report, and the fastest fixes for the two things people hit most: Full Disk Access and a missing iPhone backup.

Before you write

Two problems account for most support mail, and both have quick fixes.

“No conversations appear.” Message Album needs Full Disk Access to read ~/Library/Messages at all. Open Message Album, choose Open Full Disk Access, add Message Album in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Full Disk Access and turn it on, then return to the app and choose Check Again.

“My iPhone backup isn’t in the source list.” Message Album reads existing backups; it does not create one. Connect the device, open Finder, select it in the sidebar, choose Back Up Now, and wait for it to finish. The backup then appears in the source menu, labelled with the device name and backup date.

The FAQ covers the rest, including PDF export, group conversations, and what happens to your archives if you stop using the app.

What to include in a bug report

  • Your macOS version and Mac model.
  • The Message Album version, from Message Album › About.
  • Whether you were exporting from This Mac or from a device backup.
  • What you expected to happen, and what happened instead.
  • If an export finished with warnings, the contents of manifest.json from the archive folder. It lists counts, sizes and warnings, and contains no message text.

Please don’t send message content or attachments. They are never needed to diagnose a problem, and we would rather not receive them.
